Happy Birthday!

The Birthday Present

Five years ago, on this very same day, I received one of the most unforgettable, amazing birthday presents EVER, from M herself. It was called Confessions on a Dancefloor.

On November 14th 2005, Confessions was released. The first time I listened to it was in my room, at midnight - to my surprise, it went on sale here in Lisbon during the last hours of the 13th. I bought it immediately, went home and waited for the magical hour.

I was so overwhelmed. The music was - is and will eternally be - amazing. And I was flooded with happiness.

It will always be the most special work M has ever made, in my heart.
Needless to say that I played it today.

M by Deborah Feingold, 1983

Among the many celebrities you photographed there is of course Madonna. You did what is now considered a classic photoshoot with her in 1983. Were you asked to do the photoshoot by Warners and for a specific project?

I believe I requested the assigment from a magazine.

What do you remember of the day you met that rising young star?

It was shot in my studio/apartment. It was so tiny that all of my furniture folded up to make room for my shoots. As I recall she was very easy going.

Do you have any special memories or funny anecdotes from that day on the set?

Not really, but as I look back on the images it does appear that she was quite comfortable.

Did you sense that day she was going to become not only one of the most popular entertainers on this planet but such a huge icon?

Yes.

Bryan Ferry

I've always loved Bryan Ferry. And it was such a thrill to hear his new album, Olympia.
Which made me want to go back to his old stuff. And after listening to 1987's Bête Noire (one of my all-time favourites), I was struck by the amazing Madonna-esque sound it emanates. Limbo and Day For Night would fit her perfectly. And then I asked myself... who produced it? Went to Wiki. And... BINGO! There it was: Patrick Leonard. It's amazing how we can become so sensitive to subtleties like these...

Then I remembered: back in 1988 (precisely during the Bête Noire period), there were these rumours of a Madonna / Ferry collaboration. What a pity that it never became a matter of fact...

One thing is for sure: M did attend one of his shows, at that time.

(notice the All Access sticker on her coat... and the oh-so-gorgeous face).

The Music Building, 1980

I'm so in love with this photo.

New York, 1980. Madonna shifted gears from Dance to Music, teamed up with old (boy)friend Steve Bray and started experimenting new ways of expression, through this band called Emmy. These photos were taken on the 10th floor of The Music Building - a visual proof of one of the chapters in the Madonna Legend, that we so diligently learned through the first biographies and magazine articles.

Emmy were rehearsing, Madonna was rising...

October 20, 1992

It was Tuesday afternoon. I left school, Cilla left work, we grabbed her motorbike and flew to Lisbon. The day had finally arrived. The hours before were spent on the phone, calling to record stores in downton Lisbon, to know which would get it first. One of them was in Av. de Roma. The moment was solemn.

Got home, put the CD on, pressed Play. And I was speechless. It all sounded like Future. Vanguard. Cutting-edge. Never have I heard such a thing.

Even Dad loved it - I remember him playing Fever and raising the volume up, the house being invaded by that impressive sound.

Eighteen years later, Erotica remains my favourite album of all times.

F****** amazing!

Yesterday I saw this incredible video montage for Broken (I'm Sorry), the unreleased song from M & Oakenfold's Celebration sessions.

It was 1 a.m. and after watching this I couldn't get into sleep. I just wanted to shout yeeeeeeeeaah!!!

There's nothing like a real M fan to make a video that will blow us away - an official release definitely wouldn't top this. The reason is simple: we all speak the same language!

Thank you so much jonus30, for such an AMAZING work!!! Just... perfect.

W.E.

And it all (oficially) began like this...

Madonna’s Directorial Feature Debut to start Principal Photography on 5th July

Based on an original screenplay, “W.E”, a film written by Madonna and Alek Keshishian is set to begin shooting this summer in Europe (UK and France) and the US.

“W.E” tells two parallel love stories separated by more than six decades. Acclaimed actress Abbie Cornish (Sucker Punch, Bright Star, Elizabeth: The Golden Age) has been cast in the role of Wally Winthrop - a young married New Yorker in 1998 who is obsessed with what she perceives as the ultimate romantic love story, King Edward VIII’s abdication for his love of Wallis Simpson. Andrea Riseborough has been cast in the role of Wallis Simpson. Riseborough is best known for her outstanding Bafta Nominated performance of Margaret Thatcher in the acclaimed BBC drama “The Long Walk to Finchley” and will soon be seen in Brighton Rock. British star James D’Arcy (Master and Commander, Secret Diary of a Call Girl) will play the part of Edward VIII. Wally Winthrop”s Russian love interest Evgeni will be played by rising star Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood, Sucker Punch) and her husband William will be played by Richard Coyle (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time). Art imitates life as the revered British acting dynasty provides father and son, James Fox (Sherlock Holmes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Bafta nominated A Passage to India, Bafta winner The Servant) and Laurence Fox (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Becoming Jane) in the roles of King George V and his son, Bertie.

1936 England - Wallis Simpson, an American woman, captured the heart of King Edward VIII. Already divorced and married to her second husband when she met Edward, then the Prince of Wales in London, the two fell in love. However, once crowned, Edward was told by the Church and the Prime Minister that he could not marry Wallis and remain King... He abdicated, giving up the throne to be with the woman he loved. Once married and known as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, they lived out what many considered to be the romance of the century.

1998 N.Y - Wally Winthrop has a troubled past and moves to New York from the South to work in Sotheby’s Estate department. She gives up her job to marry a successful psychiatrist but the marriage is unhappy and Wally finds herself bored, frustrated and often alone. She seeks refuge in her obsession with what she believes to be the ultimate romantic love story, King Edward VIII’s abdication for his love of Wallis Simpson. When Wally discovers that there is going to be an auction of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s Estate at Sotheby’s, she takes the opportunity to return to her old hunting ground to try to understand the nature of the great love affair through the artifacts that once belonged to the couple. While at Sotheby’s, Wally meets Evgeni, a Russian security guard, with a mysterious past. As she immerses herself deeper into the love story of Wallis and Edward, while spending more time away from her marriage, she finds herself falling in love.

We travel back and forth in time with Wally and Wallis, two fragile but determined women whose lives become inextricably linked. However, as the story unravels it becomes apparent that Wallis Simpson’s life was not as perfect as Wally had thought.

The film will be produced by Colin Vaines (producer Coriolanus, exec producer London Boulevard, The Gangs of New York and The Young Victoria) with Executive Producers Kris Thykier (producer The Debt, Kick-Ass, Harry Brown, exec producer Stardust) and Nigel Wooll (exec producer Miss Potter, co-producer GI Jane, White Squall). The production team include Production Designer Martin Childs (Oscar Winner Shakespeare in Love, Oscar Nominated Quills, The Boy in Striped Pyjamas), Director of Photography, Hagen Bogdanski (The Lives of Others, The Young Victoria), Costume Designer, Arianne Phillips (Oscar Nominated Walk the Line, Bafta Nominated A Single Man) and Hair and Make Up Designer - Jenny Shircore (Oscar Winner Elizabeth, Bafta Winner and Oscar Nominated The Young Victoria).

Madonna & Herb

The first time I met Herb, he was on the set of Desperately Seeking Susan - and it's true, he put a pair of underwear on my head. I thought he was a real geek. I soon moved out to Los Angeles and ran into Hern again, and in his sweet, disarmong way, he suggested that we eork together again. I agreed to it and that was my real first, proper photo shoot. That's when I got "Herbified". It was the beginning of an incredibly long and fruitful working relationship. But it was also the beginning of a great friendship.
